A construction project is expected to cause major disruptions in Philadelphia’s Old City section.

Starting Monday, sections of Market Street will be closed for the next three months, PennDOT officials said.

According to PennDOT, the westbound lane of Market Street — from Second to Sixth streets — will be closed and traffic will be detoured to Arch Street to permit crews to do roadway and and sidewalk construction work.

PennDOT is urging drivers to plan ahead and expect delays around the work zone.

Market Street Closure: How does it effect businesses?

Members of the community, including business owners in the section of the city, are having to find a way to pivot around this untimely procedure.

“I think it’s pretty unfortunate, just for the businesses here,” said Amye Kosinski, of Old City. “It just makes it harder to find a place to throw trash away. So, I think people end up just tossing it on the ground, unfortunately,” said Kosinski.

Tourists flock to this historic stretch of Old City, and now with closures and constructions signs everywhere, tourists will likely stay away from America’s Most Historic Square Mile, affecting business in the area as well.

“Tourists come over, walk down from the Liberty Bell, and then they see these big fences. It just doesn’t help, they think the area’s closed,” said Vinny Palermo, Manager, The Angelo Pizza. “That’s going to affect our deliveries,”

“We saw a huge decline in our sales and foot traffic. Sales dropped by 40, 50%,” said Anser Hatti, Owner, Coffee Tea and Company.

Market Street Closure: What SEPTA lines are shut down?

SEPTA stations and bus stops in the area will remain open. However, there will be some temporary elevator and staircase closures, officials said.

Bus riders were advisers to check signage and alerts at SEPTA.org/alerts to see if their line is impacted by the construction project.

The Navy Yard shuttle, officials said, will stop at 6th and Market streets. There will be updates for this shuttle at navyyard.org.
