David Justice Goes Down Memory Lane with Halle Berry After 30 Years
David Justice Opens Up About His Divorce From Halle Berry: A Look Back Nearly Three Decades Later
David Justice, former Atlanta Braves outfielder and first baseman, recently reflected candidly on his marriage and eventual divorce from Hollywood star Halle Berry during an interview on the “All the Smoke” podcast with co-host Matt Barnes.

Justice shared that their relationship moved quickly, recalling that Berry proposed marriage after knowing him for just five months. “I don’t know if my heart was really into it,” Justice admitted. “But I didn’t want to make her feel bad and say no. I was just in the moment, it caught me off-guard. We’re getting along, we’re vibing, again, we’re only five months in, we’re still in the honeymoon stage.”
The couple married in 1993 and remained together until 1997, but their marriage faced challenges, especially with Berry frequently away filming movies overseas. Justice said the negative media attention intensified after he decided to leave her in 1996.
He also opened up about his expectations early in the marriage, coming from a traditional Midwestern background. “I’m looking at my mom, I’m a Midwest guy. So in my mind, I’m thinking a wife at that time should cook, clean,” he said. “And I’m thinking, OK, if we have kids, is this the woman I want to have kids with and build a family with? And at that time, as a young guy, she don’t cook, don’t clean, don’t really seem like motherly.”
Justice reflected that their marriage might have been salvaged had he been more knowledgeable about relationships and the benefits of therapy. “Honestly, we probably could have made it, if I knew about therapy,” he said. “It’s just that I, because I was young, had only been in honestly one real relationship before her. My knowledge and my understanding and my wisdom around relationships just wasn’t vast.”
USA TODAY has reached out to Halle Berry’s representative for comment, but no statement has been released at this time.
Justice’s reflections offer a rare and thoughtful look into the personal struggles behind a high-profile relationship that captured public attention nearly 30 years ago, showing how growth and perspective often come with time.
