What would’ve been a great tribute to one of the most legendary music festivals in American history has officially been canceled. After months of different struggles in finalizing the event, Woodstock 50 has been scrapped by producer Michael Lang.

“We are saddened that a series of unforeseen setbacks has made it impossible to put on the festival we imagined with the great line-up we had booked and the social engagement we were anticipating,” Lang told NPR in a statement.

Woodstock 50 on paper was set to be a potentially game-changing event with big names like Jay-Z, Chance the Rapper, Janelle Monae, and Miley Cyrus on the lineup. These artists had already been booked and paid, but an inability to find a venue among other issues like security and promotion made things more difficult. Woodstock 50 organizers fought to keep the concert alive despite not having a secured venue just 3 weeks prior to the August 16th start date. No tickets were ever made available for purchase.

Before cancelling, organizers reportedly attempted to move the show from New York to Maryland while also making the concert a free benefit show.

The poor execution of Woodstock 50 carried some resemblance to Fyre Festival, that famously conned wealthy millenials out of thousands of dollars for what was supposed to be a concert that would define a generation of music fans.

As shown in two different documentaries ‘Fyre Fraud’ and ‘FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened,’ the poorly executed music festival put together by Billy McFarland and rapper Ja Rule swindled concertgoers into buying tickets for a festival that hadn’t successfully secured any artists or even a real venue to host the event. McFarland was sentenced to 6 years in prison for defrauding people who bought tickets.

The concert was supposed to be a 50 year anniversary concert of the original Woodstock Festival that became an iconic concert in music history. Janis Joplin, Bob Dylan and Jimi Hendrix were just a few of the legendary artists who performed on August 16,1969. Out of the gate, Woodstock 50 received criticism for the artists they were booking with music fans saying the talent didn’t emulate anything about the original Woodstock.
