The storm cloud of negative attention that seems to hover over the president just got a lot grayer heading into this week. Not only have recent revelations seemed to further incriminate Donald Trump as a co-conspirator with foreign agents to manipulate the results of the 2016 election, but now he was all but set to make good on his threat to shut down the government for one reason only: building his beloved wall along the nation’s southern border with Mexico.

Once bandied about as a campaign promise that many say helped get him elected (well, that and Russia), Trump’s hasty immigration political talking point of building a border wall has been even more hastily packaged into next year’s budget to fund the government. Congressional leaders say a bipartisan agreement has been reached to keep border security funding at the same level as 2018, but Trump, as usual, was demanding more, including $5 billion “as a down payment on construction” for his wall.
Ignoring for a moment the fact that most Americans don’t want the wall to be built, the clear irony here was that Trump ran a campaign promising that Mexico would pay for the wall. Now, it appeared that he wanted taxpayers to foot the bill, instead. That much was made clear last week during a dramatic showdown with Democratic leaders Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Sen. Chuck Schumer in the Oval Office. Trump told them at the time that he would be “proud” to shut down the government.
Social media users promptly roasted the president for what was characterized as childish behavior that clearly prevented him from compromising on a topic that was tilting away from his favor after Democrats captured the House majority in last month’s midterm elections.
But the memes that followed that episode were nothing compared to those after White House senior adviser Stephen Miller went on national television on Sunday and reiterated how the president was intent on shutting down the government.
“If it comes to it, absolutely. This is a very fundamental issue,” Miller, who has been accused of being a racist, white nationalist and a Nazi, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation” news show. “At stake is the question of whether or not the United States remains a sovereign country. Whether or not we can establish and enforce rules for entrance into our country.”
The congressional vote was scheduled to take place Friday, but social media users logged back on to Twitter to express themselves through a series of colorful memes and show exactly what they think of the president as his “take my ball and go home” approach to running the country.
Scroll down for a sampling of the meme treatment the president was getting over the weekend and into Monday morning.

Anytime you hear @realDonaldTrump saying that we need good Border Security with his beloved Wall, write it off as just another attempt to pander to his base. Time for us to realize that the #Grifter & #ConArtistInChief has been hiring the same immigrants he wants to demonize. pic.twitter.com/pwRvAiqaDT

I am losing faith in you, sir. Why are you asking us taxpayers for 5 billion dollars if the new deal will pay for the wall? You promised that we wouldn’t have to pay for it! Please keep your promise, a free border wall, or I will not vote for you again. #NoWallNoVote pic.twitter.com/eDopbpl7T1

After all of the toxic fuming about border security, it turns out that Trump regularly hires undocumented immigrants to work at his golf clubs!
