Black Women’s History Month: Day 1
Reflections on an Article by Kennedie S. (Kenlo)
In preparation for this piece, I revisited an article by fellow PABJ member Kennedie S., also known as Kenlo. Her words beautifully captured the essence of a celebration of women, that we both attended, detailing: the atmosphere, the honorees, and the deep sense of community present. She highlighted the significance of safe and supportive spaces for Black journalists and black women in media, the powerful stories shared, and the importance of honoring those who came before us. Her reflections resonated deeply, reinforcing why moments of celebration and reverence matter so much. The following is a brief overview of her perspective and insights.
Honoring Philadelphia’s Women in Media: A Celebration of Excellence
A Nostalgic Reflection on Women’s History Month
As Black Women’s History Month begins, I find myself reflecting on the incredible women shaping media in Philadelphia. Their dedication, resilience, and impact deserve recognition.
Recently, I attended the Philadelphia Association of Black Journalists (PABJ) Women’s Brunch, a powerful gathering honoring three trailblazing journalists. The event filled my spirit with inspiration, reminding me of the strength and determination needed to thrive in this industry.
A Space of Celebration and Support
Held at Pipeline Philly, the setting exuded prestige—crisp lighting, bold colors, and a breathtaking city view. Yet, the true brilliance came from the women in the room. PABJ President Ernest Owens set the tone with a heartfelt speech, ensuring every woman felt seen and valued.
Honoring Three Powerhouses
Three phenomenal journalists were recognized for their contributions: Erin Coleman, Shawnette Wilson, and Tamara Russell (P.O.C.). Each of their stories carried lessons in perseverance, sacrifice, and community impact.
- Erin Coleman received the Woman of Inspiration Award. She spoke of rejection early in her career, sending out VHS tapes in search of an opportunity. Her journey reminded us that persistence turns “no” into the perfect “yes.”
- Shawnette Wilson was honored with The Icon Award. Her speech reflected the delicate balance between career and family, showing that success doesn’t require sacrificing loved ones.
- Tamara Russell (P.O.C.) accepted The Community Award, embodying the essence of service. Her unwavering commitment to uplifting others proves that true leadership is about giving back.
A Room Full of Possibilities
Beyond the awards, the event fostered meaningful connections. Conversations with industry leaders like Patty Jackson who offered invaluable wisdom on longevity and authenticity in media.
Final Thoughts
The PABJ Women’s Brunch was more than an event—it was a reminder of our collective power. To the women paving the way, thank you. This is just the beginning.
