GOP Backs Democrat in D.A. Race: A Bold Philly Power Play

A Surprise Twist in the Election Game
Sources say, that in a shocking political move, the Philadelphia Republican Party is funding a write-in campaign for Democratic Judge Pat Dugan. Their target? District Attorney Larry Krasner, a progressive incumbent known for criminal justice reforms. Could it be that “Philly GOP is trying to oust DA Krasner with a write-in campaign?”
Crossing Party Lines
This strategy takes advantage of a Pennsylvania primary rule loophole. In Philadelphia, Democrats dominate voter registration. So instead of backing a weak GOP candidate, Republicans are pushing Dugan to split the Democratic vote.
Judge Dugan hasn’t formally entered the race. However, Republican support and campaign spending suggest they see him as a viable contender.
What’s at Stake
Krasner remains a polarizing figure. Loved by reform advocates, he’s also blamed for rising crime rates by critics. With public safety top of mind for many voters, this tactic could turn the primary into a real fight. Philly Voice says, “Dugan has blamed Krasner for going soft on retail theft, including his since-revised policy that treated shoplifting cases under $500 as summary offenses. Dugan claims the policy led to an exodus of businesses from the city.”
In the article Dugan goes on to say, “Nobody was ever held accountable for them. Store owners had to eat the losses,” Dugan said. “That’s why stores have left us. Rite-Aid is going to leave us. Macy’s left us. Wawa invested $100 million in Center City and their nine stores are closed in Center City.”
“In the years since the COVID-19 pandemic, when homicides spiked in Philadelphia and cities across the United States, Krasner’s office has touted major declines in fatal and non-fatal shootings that outpaced progress in much of the country. Still, Dugan said too many illegal gun possession cases are not prosecuted before violent crimes take place. He also said the DA’s office has not been aggressive enough in pursuing economic crimes and illegal dumping cases.”
The Bigger Picture
This move is unprecedented in recent Philadelphia politics. It could reshape how future primaries play out. If successful, it may signal a shift in how parties strategically infiltrate the opposing side.
