Starting in fall 2027, Swarthmore College will implement the “Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee,” covering full tuition for domestic students from households earning $200,000 or less with typical assets. While aimed at simplifying financial aid and reducing barriers, the policy still requires families to cover housing, food, and student fees, which are estimated to be around $23,000 to $24,000 annually.

Swarthmore College President Valerie Smith announced that the institution’s financial aid budget exceeds $71 million, providing an average of $75,000 per student annually to ensure accessibility. Supported by an endowment that funds nearly 60% of operating costs, aims to remove financial barriers for the college’s approximately 1,700 undergraduates, reflecting an increasing trend among prestigious universities to expand financial aid.

“One of our core beliefs is that we all benefit from living and learning in a community filled with diverse perspectives and experiences,” Vice President and Dean of Admissions Jim Bock ’90 says. “We’ve worked hard to expand access to a Swarthmore education over the past decade, and we’re excited to build on that commitment with the Swarthmore Tuition Guarantee.”
