The Obama Presidential Center officially opened on Chicago’s South Side over Juneteenth weekend. The massive 19-acre civic campus in Jackson Park replaces traditional archival buildings with an interactive, fully digital museum, an athletic facility, a fruit and vegetable garden, and a new Chicago Public Library branch.
The grand opening kicked off Thursday, June 18, with an invite-only dedication ceremony that channeled the energetic “hope and change” spirit of the Obama administration. The event drew A-list musical performances from Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, John Legend, and Jennifer Hudson.
In his keynote remarks, President Barack Obama centered on the strength of our communities, the power of unity, and the enduring promise of democracy. A highly anticipated highlight of the dedication was a heartfelt, unscripted speech by Michelle Obama, where she paid tribute to her husband’s grace and leadership—a moment that visibly moved the former president to tears.
The campus officially opened to the public on Friday, June 19, celebrated with community-led events. Demonstrating the center’s mission to be a vibrant community space, the Obama’s surprised local students at the campus library, reading and acting out children’s books alongside special guest LeVar Burton. The Barack Obama Presidential Library operates as a fully digital initiative, allowing visitors to access records remotely. Instead of housing traditional physical artifacts and documents, the campus museum allows visitors to explore exhibits that feature a replica of the Oval Office and exhibits touching on iconic Michelle Obama fashion.
While the library, Home Court athletics facility, and surrounding parkland are free and open to the public daily, entry to the primary museum tower requires a timed ticket. The Obama Foundation noted that initial museum admission tickets sold out quickly. Moving forward, the institution is expected to draw up to 1 million visitors annually, serving as a permanent beacon of civic leadership on the South Side.
