Ms. Lauryn Hill Honored with Living Legend BET Award

The 2026 BET Awards officially made history on Sunday night, and Ms. Lauryn Hill walked away with the flowers she has long deserved. Broadcasted live from Los Angeles, culture’s biggest night introduced its inaugural Living Legend Icon Award, honoring the powerhouse vocalist who bridged the gap between classic soul and modern hip-hop.

Introduced by hip-hop pioneer Ice Cube, the tribute segment transformed into an unforgettable 20-minute musical masterpiece. A star-studded lineup took the crowd on a journey through Hill’s timeless catalog. SZA and Doechii opened the medley with “Ready or Not,” followed by Philadelphia’s own Tierra Whack and Tems keeping the energy high with “Fu-Gee-La.” For the true old-school heads, the night hit a peak when Doja Cat and Nas reunited for “Superstar” and the ultimate anthem, “If I Ruled The World.” The tribute culminated in pure joy as Lizzo and Rapsody rocked “Doo Wop (That Thing),” alongside living legend Queen Latifah and lyricist Common.

Giving the performance a beautiful family touch, three of Hill’s children, Selah, Zion, and YG Marley, also stepped up to honor their mother’s deep musical legacy. But the real magic happened after the medley of unforgettable hits. Realizing no one was scheduled to sing her seminal masterpiece, “Ex-Factor,” Hill spontaneously grabbed the microphone. She shocked the room by delivering a flawless, impromptu live rendition of the soulful ballad, bringing the entire auditorium to its feet.

Accepting her trophy, Hill delivered a powerful, moving speech about staying true to your artistry and community. “I do this because I love y’all,” Hill shared with the roaring crowd. “All of our differences, all of our uniqueness, that’s the beauty, y’all.” It was a monumental night celebrating an artist whose music remains a permanent fixture in our hearts and playlists.
