Philadelphia kicked off the nation’s 250th birthday celebrations over the weekend in true Philly style. On Saturday, hundreds gathered at the National Constitution Center for the city’s Celebration of Freedom ceremony. Mayor Cherelle Parker led the event, recognizing local icons whose lives and work embody the resilient spirit of our city.
Among the seven Philadelphia Freedom Award recipients were several hometown heroes who have made major waves on the global stage. West Philly’s own Oscar-nominated actor, Colman Domingo, took home the Philadelphia Freedom Award and the 2026 One Philly Award for the American Voice. While accepting the honor, Domingo shared his deep love for his roots, shouting out, “They ask me where I get my style from, and I say, ‘Baby I come from Philly.’”
Community Champions and Future Honors
The city also celebrated Wallace “Wallo” Peeples and Nasir “Gillie Da King” Fard, the successful duo behind the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast. They received the Award for Restorative Justice & Resilience, honoring their incredible journey and impact on the community. Other notable honorees included former U.S. Ambassador David L. Cohen and Comcast Spectacor CEO Daniel Hilferty.
Mayor Parker’s speech struck a powerful chord, reminding the crowd that celebrating America means looking at our whole history. “On this 250th birthday, we do not honor only the triumph. We also remember the cost,” she stated, emphasizing the continuous work needed to protect life and liberty. Looking forward, the city announced exciting plans to erect statues honoring legendary trailblazers Harriet Tubman, Blanche A. Nixon, and Sadie T. Alexander.
It was a beautiful weekend of reflection, celebration, and Brotherly Love (and Sisterly Affection).
