Al Sharpton Offers $50K Reward in Nolan Wells Case
Rev. Al Sharpton has offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in connection with the death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells.
Wells disappeared on July 4 while attending a boating gathering with friends near Horn Island, Mississippi. His body was discovered two days later near the island. Authorities have not publicly announced an official cause or manner of death.
Sharpton announced the reward during Wells’ funeral, saying someone who attended the gathering may know what happened. Filmmaker Tyler Perry and others have also contributed, bringing the reported reward total to $125,000.
An independent autopsy requested by Wells’ family listed his cause and manner of death as undetermined. The examination reportedly found a red discoloration on the back of his head that requires further investigation, although no skull fractures or deep tissue injuries were discovered. The medical examiner said decomposition and the earlier official autopsy made it difficult to reach a final conclusion.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump, the NAACP and Wells’ family are demanding a complete and transparent investigation. Foul play has not been confirmed, but the independent examiner said it also could not be ruled out.
The official autopsy and toxicology results have not yet been released. The investigation remains ongoing, and the completed case could eventually be presented to a grand jury.
