Brandy to Sing Theme for Netflix’s “A Different World” Sequel

Brandy is putting her own spin on a television classic. The R&B star will perform the opening theme song for Netflix’s upcoming A Different World sequel series, welcoming a new generation to Hillman College when the show premieres September 24 on Netflix.

Netflix confirmed the news through Tudum on August 11, revealing that Brandy recorded a fresh interpretation of the familiar theme while keeping the recognizable lyrics associated with the original sitcom.

For Brandy, taking on the song has a deeper personal meaning. The singer and actress grew up watching A Different World and has shared how seeing young Black students represented on television helped expand her own idea of what was possible.

She’s also stepping into some major musical footsteps. The legendary Aretha Franklin performed one of the best-known versions of the theme during the original show’s run. Rather than trying to replace that history, Brandy hopes to honor it while bringing her own sound to the next chapter.

“I just hope I can do it as much justice as Ms. Franklin,” Brandy told Netflix’s Tudum.

The original A Different World premiered in 1987 and followed students navigating college life at the fictional HBCU Hillman College. Over the years, the series became a cultural touchstone for its portrayal of Black college life and its willingness to explore everything from relationships and friendships to race, politics and personal growth.

Netflix’s sequel will move the Hillman story forward by introducing Deborah Wayne, the daughter of beloved original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Maleah Joi Moon will portray Deborah, while Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are returning as Dwayne and Whitley.

The new generation of Hillman students will face their own academic, romantic and personal challenges while remaining connected to the characters and traditions that made the original series so beloved.

Brandy also has her own significant place in Black television history. Her starring role in Moesha made her one of the defining young Black television stars of the 1990s, while her role as Cinderella in the 1997 television film became another landmark moment in representation. Brandy has said that seeing performers who looked like her on A Different World encouraged her to dream bigger and pursue acting herself.

Now, nearly four decades after viewers were first introduced to Hillman College, Brandy’s voice will help welcome them back.
