Philadelphia Named Finalist to Host 2028 Democratic National Convention
Philadelphia is one of three finalists to host the 2028 Democratic National Convention, putting the city one step closer to welcoming thousands of delegates, journalists and political leaders from across the country.
The Democratic National Committee announced Thursday that Philadelphia, Boston and Denver remain in contention. Atlanta and Chicago, which were previously among five potential host cities, have been eliminated.
DNC Chair Ken Martin praised the remaining bids, saying the three cities presented “incredibly strong bids” and that the party will continue working with them before making a final decision in the coming months.
Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, who has led the city’s effort to secure the convention, pointed to the city’s ability to handle major events. Philadelphia hosted FIFA World Cup matches, the MLB All-Star Game and celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday during a busy 2026 summer.
“Philadelphia this year has proven that we can do big things better than any other city in the country,” Parker said. “We are ready to welcome the Democratic Party and the nation back to our city.”
If selected, Philadelphia would host the convention at Xfinity Mobile Arena in South Philadelphia from August 7–10, 2028. The city last hosted the Democratic convention in 2016, when Hillary Clinton was nominated for president.
The convention would also provide Philadelphia with another opportunity to showcase its hospitality, entertainment and business communities on a national stage. A final host-city decision is expected later this year.
