The Duchess of Sussex gets another win over her monarchial critics.

On the day after Christmas readers of the British tabloid paper, The Mail on Sunday, noticed a special headline.

The headline read,

“The Duchess of Sussex wins her legal case for copyright infringement against Associated Newspapers for articles published in The Mail on Sunday and posted on Mail Online.”

Meghan and The Mail have been in a legal struggle since 2019.

The Mail on Sunday and Mail Online published elements of a five-page letter she wrote to her father soon after her royal wedding to Prince Harry. This act by the UK tabloid was ruled on several counts as a breach of privacy, and on page three of Sunday’s paper an apology was stated.

“Following a hearing on 19-20 January, 2021, and a further hearing on 5 May, 2021, the Court has given judgment for the Duchess of Sussex on her claim for copyright infringement. The Court found that Associated Newspapers infringed her copyright by publishing extracts of her handwritten letter to her father in The Mail on Sunday and on Mail Online. Financial remedies have been agreed.”

The “fianancial remedies” the paper is referring to is the 90% of Meghan’s estimated $1.88 million legal expenses. That’s a lot of pounds. Judge Warby of The High Court in London ordered the British tabloid include apology statements that explicitly incited that they were the one’s responsible for the damage.

He has even forced them place the story on the Mail Online’s front page for a whole week and to include hyperlink’s to the full judgement and summary of the case. The publisher of the tabloid tried to fight the ruling again but they ultimately failed in their attempt, as the ruling was upheld on December 2 by the Court of Appeal in London.

That same day she released a statement ensuring that this is the right decision.

While this win is precedent-setting, what matters most is that we are now collectively brave enough to reshape a tabloid industry that conditions people to be cruel, and profits from the lies and pain that they create.

Meghan also briefly spoke about her win at The New York Times’ DealBook/Online Summit,
